After several disappointments, Spain has finally come to a point where they need to feel secure about their entry in the  Contest especially after managing to convince Pastora Soler to represent the country. The track that she performed with the title Quedaté Conmingo was an enormous hit all over the world. Juries went crazy over the live performance and it showed because at the end of the evening, Spain finished in tenth place, making it their first top ten placing since 2004 when Ramon had performed his track Para llenarme De Ti. When an artist succeeds, it gives them courage to try out something new and it seems that this has been one of the positive elements why talks with Pablo Alborán even began noting that the EMI Spain star is currently one of the most popular artists in the country.

RTVE were keen to get him on board due to his new found success with his debut album entitled Pablo Alborán charting at number #1 in Spain and achieving a 6x Platinum Disc. In the meantime, his label also released a live album entitled En Acústico which also managed to reach the top of the charts, but this time in Spain and Portugal, where it was also certified 6x Platinum and 5x Platinum respectively. Five singles have been released thus far, two of which have peaked at number #1, another two which have reached number #2 and the other one which could only manage number #40 due to a digital release only. RTVE is yet to go on record with this information but then again, the media seems to have gotten a hold of the story is making quite the rounds. The idea of having a successful male performer sing for the nation is truly endearing. One this is for sure that Spain is trying to pump their local traditional music back into the Eurovision Song Contest with the Latin Nominated Performer known for his sultry Spanish ballads.

Pastora Soler : “Quédate Conmigo was the one I wanted to sing in Baku”

Pastora Soler is very happy with the election of Quédate Conmigo, since from the begining it was her favorite although she defended the 3 entries with power and passion. It was my favorite song, I am extremely happy. It has been an intense night in a breathtaking show, I had no idea about what would happen and I spent half of the show crying” stated the Spanish singer. “I am superhappy and now it is time to work it out: new arrangements, staging, production, costume design.. I could not wait for this moment after two intense months” Clarified Pastora after the show.

Quédate conmigo,  composed by Antonio Sánchez, Thomas G:son and Erik Bernholm with lyrics from Antonio Sánchez, is a power-ballad full of energy and a rich melody which grows as the song goes forward, where Pastora Soler shines with her powerfull vocals. The lyrics are simple but effective and they are about a plea to the beloved one so he stays by our side.

Will Chenoa represent Spain?

Golden years seem to be gone for Spain with a high unemployement rate a huge debt and cuts in the social services the Spanish miracle has vanished quite similar situation for the Latin soul of Europe in music. Sony Spain decided to close down and moved headquarters to Miami,Spain is no longer a referent for Latin Music but just a puppet of Latinamerican sounds in order to produce repetitive summer songs which airing days are limited. In Television situation is even worse,Spanish talent shows are failing to providing new stars which fade before start shining while there has not been a single Music-Show in any of the main Tv-channels within the last 4 years. While the situatin is beyond than critical, for Eurovision has already started the coma; Spanish last top-10 is dated in 2.004 with the 10th place achieved by Ramon, Spain has even been stugling to enter the top-20 with two excpetion the deniable “Chiki-Chiki” and “Algo Pequeñito” which conquered plenty of televoting but did not managed to get enough votes from viewers, 3 from the last 4 songs have been wrotten by eurofans while the other was picked as a rejected track from two greek artists. Is anyone hoping anything from Spain? Part of the blame fails on RTVE, Spanish public television lack’s of interest in the Contest, without a clear plan or srategy to follow. Big Artists are also not interested in the Contest but situation has been changing lately and even though we still have no idea about which Spanish plan do we have for Baku there is a name constantly in the Media and this time seems to be repeating so often; Chenoa.

Born in Argentina but moving to Palma when she was 7, Laura Corradini aka Chenoa arose popularity in the first edition of “Operación Triunfo” together with Rosa. She finished 4th therefore she was out of the Eurovision competition but she was picked to back-up Rosa in the back singers. Her first two albums sold masively but then her career start to lose air and came down like a balloon, her last album was quite poor and Chenoa was more famous for her persona life as for her musical performance, last year she came back to Eurovision as part of the Spanish jury. However Spanish fans have always kept her in their sight and she has been selected for second years in a row as the most beloved candidate to represent Spain in Eurovision. The yearly poll from eurovision-spain.com has massive impact in the media with around 5.000 voters. This time Chenoa has positevely reacted to the poll and she started pro-actively facing the possibility to represent Spain in Eurovision. Within two months Chenoa has been in Radio, Television and Press praising Eurovision as the most important musical event of the year, a platform which she would not let behind and would love to take part in; she is also realistic about it and although she aims to represent Spain she also recognizes that there is a long way between wanted to do something and having this materialized. I can read this as a call to RTVE, Chenoa does not want to be competing with other artist in a National Final and she wants to get involved in the selection of the song, this two premises are a must for Chenoa to take part in the contest, the second one is quite understandable since the past experiences of Soraya and Lucía Perez, both critizised lack of support from TVE which ignored artist wishes in terms of staging and production. Not all comments from Chenoa towards Eurovision are candy, she also recently critizised the political voting in the Contest, well she needs first to make up her mind and demonstrate if her intentions are truth or if she is just taking profit of the situation to promote her new single “Como un Fantasma”.

Will RTVE follow the hints of Chenoa and co-operate together to bring back Spain to the top? Or will all these being an futile exercise again? We will have to wait to know what will happen in Spain, personally and due to the situation both Chenoa and RTVE are through, joining forces will be a win win situation for them. TVE will secure a big audience by having Chenoa while the second one will promote her new album profiting her Eurovision nomination.

Liechtenstein’s attempts in Eurovision

Liechtenstein has never participated at the Eurovision Song Contest, however the contest has had a long history within the country, with at least one attempt to participate being made by the Principality.

Background and first attempts

Liechtenstein has never taken part in the Eurovision Song Contest before. However Liechtensteiners have had the opportunity to watch the contest on Swiss, Austrian or German television. The country has made attempts to participate in the contest in the past: in 1969 a French language song had apparently been selected to represent Liechtenstein at the Contest, held in Madrid, Spain.

The song, “Un beau matin” by Vetty, would not have been able to represent the German-speaking country due to rules stating that only songs in the national language could represent the country – however as there was no Liechtensteiner television broadcaster in 1969 there was no possibility that Liechtenstein could enter the contest. Later, it was found that this was a pun made up by a French comedian. Later in 1976 a Liechtenstein entry was once again selected to compete in the contest – Biggi Bachman and “Little Cowboy” would have been the country’s first entry had there been a national broadcaster, but as there was none in the country the entry was rejected from competing.

The first “supposed” entry of Liechtenstein

A broadcaster and Eurovision interest

On 15 August 2008, 1FLTV, licensed by the Liechtensteiner Government, became the first broadcaster based in Liechtenstein. This would allow the country to begin competing at the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time, should they decide to join the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), a pre-requisite for entering the contest.Shortly after its foundation however, the broadcaster announced that they were not interested in joining the EBU or Eurovision at that time because they had no budget for membership.

In July 2009, the broadcaster officially announced its intent to apply to join the EBU by the end of July, with the intent of taking part at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, to be held in Norway.Peter Kölbel, managing director of 1FLTV, officially confirmed the broadcaster’s interest, revealing that they had plans to develop a national final similar to Deutschland sucht den Superstar, the German version of the Idol series. In November 2009, 1FLTV decided to postpone EBU and Eurovision plans, due to financial reasons began to search for other options for funding EBU membership in the future.

1FLTV submitted its application for EBU membership on 29 July 2010. If accepted, 1FLTV would have gained full EBU membership and would have been able to send an entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2011.However, Liechtenstein did not appear on the official list of participants for Eurovision 2011. Let’s hope it will come in the next edition of the Contest, in 2012 to be held in Azerbaijan.
