Pastora Soler to sing three songs in the National Final

In a recent interview to the newspaper “elcomercio.es”,  Pastora Soler provided some hints about her coming contribution in the Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Bakú. The artist and her team are currently evaluating songs from her last album “Una Mujer como yo”  (a woman like me) to be adapted to Eurovision but they also requested songs from prestigious Spanish composers like David de María, Manuel Carrasco, Pablo Alborán or David Santiesteban.

Once she will have heard the proposals she confirmed that her team will pick-up a ballad, an up-tempo and something more catchy; this confirms a Spanish selection to be made of three songs similar as the ones from 2002 or 2003 when Spain achieved its last top-10.

Pastora highlighted her wishes to send a ballad and stated “I feel comfortable with ballads and they are the strongest part of my register and repertoire although pop songs achieved better results in the last years, it has to be a song easy to listen and without necessarily great lyrics since I will be singing in Spanish, I would not mind to sing a small part in English so they viewers could understand the message”.

Pastora wold prefer also to have a simple performance avoiding dance routines or complicated staging “Something simple so people will concentrate on the song and the performance,  Azerbaidjan won without anything spectacular so Germany did in 2010″.

The highest priority of the singer is to finish in a good position this is the reason why she will not impose to select a song from her album “We have not been in the top-10 within the last 10 years, so we have to concentrate to achieve at least one or to finish in the first half of the scoreboard

TO AVOID A FLAMENCO ENTRY

She has in her mind the 0 points received by Remedios Amaya “Spanish Folk does not work in Eurovision, it is what tourists are looking for when they are coming here but they definitely do not like in the Song Contest”.

Pastora sees Eurovison as an opportunity to get other public to know her in Europe or even in Spain “Since people in Spain tends to relate artists with a particular style, in my case only flamenco”; she is really excited and full of joy to start working on the song “specially now that music industry is having a critical situation”

Finally Pastora also mentioned her worries about neighbourhood voting in Eurovision, “It has been an issue within the last years and it is something that does not help Spain since we are in the corner of Europe with only three neighbours and one of them dropped from Eurovision”

Festivali i Këngës celebrates its 50th Anniversary

In less than 24 hrs the 50th edition of “Festivali i Këngës” will be kicked-off.  Since 2003 the contests selects the Albanian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest but it was founded much earlier ago in 1962, and has survived  social, political and financial problems as well as the repression during Albanian dictatorship which did not stop the contest to be hosted continuously in the last 50 years which makes it the 4th oldest song-contest in Europe.

On 21st December 1962 began the first edition where 20 songs, some of them performed by two or three different artists, competed in the semifinal but only 12 made it to the big final which conquered Vaçe Zela. She is also the one that has achieved more victories, 11 in total, two years later she won again but as second best since the jury decided that no first place will be awarded, due to the low quality of the songs .

The competition has been part of Albanian history and evolution, the first editions there was not political topics among the songs but in 1972 Enver Hoxha decided to make the contest a political propaganda for the system, by controlling its participants, manipulating the lyrics and imprisoning its organizers which were accused of enemies of the state. During this dark times the songs highlighted the values of the Communist system and the eventual development of Albanian society; even in 1980 it was decided to change the winner in a last minute political decision same as in 1987 were the first Albanian Lady forced the jury to change their decision and picked her own favorite.

Wind of changes arrived during the 1990s with the death of Hoxha which brought back freedom to the contest and the first participants born in the exile outside Albanian borders, the word “God” was also introduced to the lyrics since religion was forbidden during the regime. Most of the winning songs talked about freedom, immigration or democracy, as well as the troubled times that Albania faced due to the collapse of the system.

On 1994 Mariza Ikonomi debuted in the contest with only 12 years old  being till today the youngest contestant,  on 1998 arrived the first winner from Kosovo, Albërie Hadërgjonaj, with a song about the  Kosovo War; and the last edition of the decade gave the first victory, from the three achieved so far, to Aurela Gaçe.

The new Millenium arrived with a lost of interest in the contest which was no longer the big event of year, but the announcement in 2003 of Albanian participation in Eurovision reactivated the audiences. This decade was plenty of scandals like the abruptly leaving of Mariza Ikonomi when  Anjeza Shanini was announced winner , Mariza wanted so bad to be the first representing Albania, the not attendance to rehearsals of Ledina Celo in 2004 or the corruption, sabotage and money exchange for votes accusations which lead several participants to drop the 2007 competition.

The contest will be host at the  Tirana Palace of Congresses which has been hosting the contest since 1989, prior it was also celebrated in the ILA between 1962 and 1969 and then at the Opera and Ballet Theater till 1988. Vaçé Zela has the most wins so far, 11, and among other multiple winners we have  Aurela Gaçe with  3 (1999,2001 y 2010)  and  Frederik Noci with 2 (1989 y 2006) coincidentally both songs failed to qualified to Eurovision Final.

Once again Festivali i Këngës will bring the best Albanian artists to compete for a ticket to Baku.

DORA back to the Glorious days

Zlatko Turkalj from HRT has confirmed a change in the Croatian National Final “DORA” to be back to the former format and encouraging the best Croatian artists to take part in the contest as it happened in the first editions of the event. Croatia has been the only ex-Yugoslavian republic which has not missed any competition since its debut in 1.993. Since then they have organised a national Final. Between 1.993 and 2.010 the contest has been continuously taking part in the Crystal-Ballroom of the Hotel  Kvarner in Opatija, but was not until 1.995 when it took the name DORA in honoring the Croatian composer Dori Pejacevic; the contest had its glorious days  between 1.995 and 1.999 where the country achieved also the best positions ever in Eurovision, but since then the quality of the songs and artists has been going down till hitting bottom with last year’s new format searching for a new talent. HRT has recently asked its viewers who they would like to send to Eurovision and with a 40% of the votes they clearly selected Jelena Rozga, ex-Magazin lead singer which succeeded Danijela in the band.

MTVHU

Hungary to host a National Final

MTV, which is the National Hungarian Broadcaster not the famous music channel, has confirmed that Hungary will host back a National Final to select its twelfth Eurovision contestant, 7 years after the group NOX was selected with the same procedure.  Further details have not been yet revealed but the process will have two semifinals with four qualifiers each and a Final, all of them to be chosen by 50/50 jury and televoting. Philip Rákay,  Programme Director by MTV confirmed the change of strategy due to the increase of viewers in 2.011. Eurovision figures were the highest ever in Hungary due to Katy Wolf entry, therefore they will like to involve the audience in the selection of the next entry.

RTVE will announce a brand new format before end of the year

Spanish lack of news about the 2.012 representative is putting fans on the verge of a nervous breakdown, Spanish Head of Eurovision and older member of the EBU group, Federico Llano has just announced that the National Broadcaster will announce a brand new format before end of the year. Spanish fans have been cherished within the last 3 years with early announcements. 2.011 process was published on 4th November 2.010, the one that choose Daniel Diges was on 27th November 2.009, while the one for Soraya was announced on 25th November 2.008. But if we go back till 2.008 the combined internet + televoting process which brought the horrendeous Chikiliquatre to Eurovision was not made public till 22nd January 2.008. To be honest I think people are being just a bit histerical here and seems like we need the news the earliest the better instead enjoying the most what the have got so far.  The possibility of an internal decission picking Chenoa seems to vanished so far, or maybe TVE is organizing a Final with several songs for Chenoa which will help her promote her new album and get a good entry for Baku? Chenoa, Falete and David Civera said it clear, they will not compete against other artist for a place in Baku. This is the sad reality of Spanish musicians, the seem to put in risk their careers just by competing among others but they do prefer to waste their time acting as juries in average talent shows. Whatever it will be, looks like the Spanish fans will eat their New Year’s celebration grapes with news about Eurovision 2.012, or maybe not? The answer within 12 days.
